SPORTS SEASON BEGINS
29 September 2009

With the summer heat beginning to cool, the sports season in the UAE is just about to begin, and starting from October onwards, the Emirates will be host to some of the most exciting sporting events in the World.

30th October – November 01st – Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

The first Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will take place at the most beautiful, innovative and luxurious motorsport circuit ever built.

Situated on Yas Island, just off the coast of Abu Dhabi, Yas Marina Circuit is a short drive from the capital city of the UAE and adjacent to the international airport.

From November 2009 it will be the venue for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the climax of the World Championship season.

With easy access by land, air and sea, Yas Marina Circuit will offer spectators, sponsors, Formula 1™ and other event partners an incomparable experience.

Yas Marina Circuit is unique. It is the only circuit in the world where a 500 bedroom, 5-star hotel actually straddles the track! The Yas Hotel guests will have access to the Paddock via a purpose-built footbridge and their own entrance to the circuit.

Every single grandstand seat on Yas Marina Circuit will be under cover – another world first. It is all a part of a strategy that puts people first, whether spectators, teams, media or corporate guests and partners.

From the Yacht Club to the Media Centre, to the Team Buildings and the Marina, the Karting Centre, the Drag Racing Centre, the Driving School and the Business Park Centre, Yas Marina Circuit is built on quality, style and state-of-the-art technology. From November 2009, it will operate year-round as the world’s premier motorsport venue.

19th November – Dubai World Championship (Golf)

The Dubai World Championship is the culmination of The Race to Dubai, the new season-long competition that replaces The European Tour Order of Merit and encompasses The Tour’s most prestigious tournaments, the Major Championships and the World Golf Championships. Beginning on 19 November 2009, the top 60 players will tee off over four days with no cut on the spectacular Earth by Greg Norman course.

The winners of the Championship will share the US $7.5 million purse; those finishing in the top 15 on The Race to Dubai will split the US $7.5 million bonus pool.

CW ONLINE INTERVIEW
17 September 2009

FACE-TO-FACE: METRO TALK

What is your reaction to the delay of 19 Dubai Metro stations on the Red Line?

Scott Richards, ACW Holdings director of client services, answers A soft-launch is a practical solution for an ambitious project and given the scale of the Metro. The Septemper 9 decision to hold back 19 stations was an advisable decision. It does impact the usefulness of the Metro at this stage but it clearly helped Dubai to get some proverbial runs on the board locally and internationally.

Will you use the metro?

Scott Richards answers Certainly. With the remaining stations open it provides a nice arterial reach to the malls and other regions of the emirate. I used the Metro on September 10 and it was one of those experiences in Dubai where they delivered expectations.

Do you think the Dubai Metro will be a success when it is fully completed?

Scott Richards answers Yes. The Red and Green lines will serve a lot of Dubai. I would say that the construction of the other lines are vital for the success of the newer regions of Dubai, particularly along Emirates Road, where the super-developments are being constructed.

Will it meet the infrastructure needs of the city?

Scott Richards answers It will contribute to the relief of congestion on the roads. The metro is just one part of a civic infrastructure, it offers a good-opportunity to make the workforce more mobile, and increase people’s choices as to where they live and work. It’s certainly a positive step towards the maturation of the city.

What more can the gulf do to improve its infrastructure?

Scott Richards answers The infrastructure here has evolved at a phenomenal rate. There are clearly concerns around things such as electricity, sewage and waste disposal. Civic infrastructure takes time, and the master-planned communities have come about before that was in place.

Because of the drop in traffic this year, is there still a big demand for road projects?

Scott Richards answers The road projects here can seem diabolical in their complexity and scale, but we have a road-capacity three times what we require for several reasons: access, growth and international drivers.
